Workshop
9.30am – 4.30pm

“A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS”

A day-long follow-on course to “She’s not going to hurt you!”  The aim of the course is to help participants gain a better understanding of ‘what makes people tick’ in the dental surgery and in relation to oral care.  In other words the focus will be on the cognitive (thought driven) aspects of dentistry and dental fear.

The course is only open to individuals who have attended a “She’s not going to hurt you!” course.  This course should be run approximately 6 months after “She’s not going to hurt you!” to allow for consolidation of the contents of the initial course.

“A penny for your thoughts” will take the form of a workshop.  Participants must be prepared to participate in group work, such as brain-storming and in role plays (no one will be humiliated).  Thus numbers will have to be limited to 12.

By the end of the day, participants will be able to:

  • Describe and give examples of the types of schema and consequent negative automatic thoughts (NATs) which are linked to dental anxiety and self-care practices
  • Understand the link between NATs and the behaviour and attitudes of their patients
  • Participants should thus be able to help their patients challenge these NATs and see greater success in treatment.

Speakers:

Helen Chapman MSc, BDS, LDS RCS (Eng), Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry
