St Richard's Hospital

St Richard's is a 450 bed acute General Hospital based in Chichester and employs approximately 2000 people.  It is the main provider of acute services for the Chichester Health Authority, which serves a population of approximately 183,000.

The main demographic factor which influences healthcare providers in this area is that this is an ageing population, 11% aged over 75 years and 24% aged over 65 years.  The hospital also provides contracted services for patients from the neighbouring Health Authorities of Worthing, Mid Downs and Portsmouth, as well as Extra-Contractual Referrals.

The hospital has undergone a £44 million redevelopment.  The first of three phases included a Day Surgery Unit (opened in April 1994) which provided 2 operating theatres, 2 endoscopy rooms and a treatment room.  There are 6 pre-treatment beds and 20 recovery/post treatment beds, 14 beds for anaesthetic recovery and a separate facility for patients to rest and recover before going home.

Other projects in phase one included additional car parking and roads, a replacement Junior doctor's Mess and accommodation for Medical Students, improvements to Theatre Sterilisation Unit and a new larger Diabetes Centre.

The second phase of redevelopment saw a New Ward Block, comprising of 16 wards, 6 theatres, a 6 bedded Intensive Care Unit and a 6 bedded Coronary Care Unit, Day Hospital for the Elderly and a Rehabilitation Department.  This work lasted from July 1994 to December 1996.

Phase 3 took place between 1997-1999 and involved the conversion of West Block which principally provided refurbished accommodation for Women and Children, conversion of South Block to accommodate additional outpatients, office accommodation, extension to the Pharmacy and a new restaurant.

The Chichester Area

The centre of the historic Georgian city of Chichester is within easy walking distance of St Richard's Hospital.

Apart from the magnificent architecture of the 900 year old Cathedral and its surrounds, it is a lively centre which offers a comprehensive choice of shopping from department stores to small local shops.  There is also a large range of pubs, bars and restaurants with the Festival Theatre and the New Park Film Centre just along the road from the hospital.

The leisure opportunities in this area are many and varied.  To the north of the city are the beautiful South Downs, where you can walk, cycle or ride the South Downs Way.  Also here are Goodwood Racecourse, Goodwood Park Golf and Country Club and Goodwood Golf Club.

To the south is Chichester Golf Centre with 9 and 18 hole 'pay and play' facilities.

Chichester Harbour is a vast, unspoilt stretch of sheltered water, which is also a nature reserve for birds.  Here you can sail and windsurf at any level.
