The Foundation Programme is a two-year general training programme which forms the bridge between medical school and specialist/general practice training. Trainees have the opportunity to gain experience in a series of placements in a variety of specialties and healthcare settings. Learning objectives for each stage are specific and focused on demonstration of clinical competences.
The first year of the Foundation Programme builds upon the knowledge, skills and competences acquired in undergraduate training.
The learning objectives for this year are set by the General Medical Council. In order to attain full registration with the GMC, doctors must achieve specific competences by the end of this year. (Please see the GMC website for more details: www.gmc-uk.org)
The second year of the Foundation Programme builds on the first year of training. The F2 year main focus is on training in the assessment and management of the acutely ill patient. Training also encompasses the generic professional skills applicable to all areas of medicine – team work, time management, communication and IT skills.

F1 Doctors Simulation Training Day
Dear Colleague,
We have recently learned of a remarkably useful resource pack for doctors who are off work through illness. It has been written by an F2 doctor in Bristol based on her own experience. I for one was not aware, for example, that F1 doctors have only 1 month of full sick pay and 1 of half pay before their salary is stopped – quite a challenge with their huge student debts! The pack is full of useful advice and links to support resources.
I strongly recommend that you follow the link below and have a look at what she has put together – the UKFPO have kindly put it on their website to allow others to access it. It has relevance to all doctors, but particularly those in the earlier part of their career.
