Following the Trust merger there are 115 Foundation Year 1 and 2 doctors within the new organisation, making the Foundation Faculty the largest. Furthermore, as newly qualified doctors, the Foundation trainees require more hands-on and pastoral care than their more senior counterparts. Finally we have a responsibility to produce an in-house training programme for Foundation doctors, this fulfilling the requirements of the national Foundation curriculum. This is in contrast to more senior trainees where formal training programmes are set at a regional level.

Given the above it is evident that there will continue to be comprehensive Foundation functions on both sites and it is unlikely that the Foundation LFGs will merge this year. The challenge however is to ensure that all Foundation trainees are subject to the same standards across the Trust. At present there are a number of discrepancies between the two sites. For example the induction process on the two sites is very different; the educational contract signed by the trainees is a different document; the delivery of pastoral care is different. It is clear that the Foundation Faculties on both sites have developed some innovative and highly beneficial examples of good practice and these should be spread throughout the Trust.

Currently there is a Foundation Year 1 Lead and a Foundation Year 2 Lead on each site. The levels of remuneration for these important posts are very different at the two sites. Hence, and with immediate effect, the Foundation Leads on the two sites will receive equivalent remuneration for their posts. The current remuneration levels of the Worthing postholders will be used as the benchmark and the increase in overall funding will be met from current Foundation budgets.

The four Trust Foundation Leads will be asked to form a single mangement team with immediate effect, although each Lead will retain his/her current site and year-specific responsibilities. The Foundation team will be expected to meet at regular intervals in addition to the usual LFG meetings, and will report formally to the LAB and informally to the DME and clinical tutors as required. The Foundation team will be responsible for determining the strategic and operational development of Foundation teaching within the Trust. It will:

• Update induction for Foundation doctors so that this process is the same on the two sites. It must incorporate all required clinical, operational and health and safety requirements

• Design a core teaching programme on each site with reference to the Foundation curriculum

• Design and introduce a common educational contract for all Foundation doctors within the Trust

• Ensure that all Foundation doctors, no matter what their location, receive equivalent opportunites for learning, and equivalent recognition for their efforts e.g. in future both sites will nominate doctors for Foundation School merit awards.

• Function as a coherent management team.

• Ensure adequate careers guidance and counselling on each site.

• Examine on a continual basis opportunities for progressive integration of the Foundation function across the two sites, with amalgamation of the two Foundation faculties being the ultimate goal.

• Produce an annual audit and review document for each that adequately demonstrates the above; it must work towards the production of a single annual audit and review document for Foundation for the Trust as a whole
