Registration
• You must register with the RCGP in order to obtain an eportfolio
• Without an eportfolio you will not be able to comply with the requirements of learning and assessment for your membership exam
nMRCGP – A competency based examination
• There are 12 competencies which you need to demonstrate to a competent level by the end of your training
• A competency is the possession and development of knowledge, skills, attitude and experience for one to be able to effectively perform their role
nMRCGP
The 12 competencies are demonstrated through the eportfolio via:
• Workplace based assessments
• Completing the learning requirements within the eportfolio
• College led assessments
• Having demonstrated Out of Hours Competencies and
• Completed your CPR, child safety, leadership and BLS certificates
1. Workplace based assessments – WPBA
• Case Based Discussions – CbD
• Consultation exercises – miniCEX
• Multisource feedbacks – MSF
• Patient Satisfaction questionnaires – PSQ
• Directly Observed Procedures – DOPS
• Clinical Supervisor reviews – CSR
• Educational Supervisor reviews – ESR
2. Learning requirements within the eportfolio
• To record your learning and reflect on your learning within the learning log
• To develop a Personal Development Plan
3. College led assessments
• Clinical Skills assessment – CSA
• Applied Knowledge test – MCQ
• It is recommended these are taken in your final year of training
Workplace based assessments – Minimum requirement in ST1-1
• 6 CbD – 2 per 4 month training post
• 6 miniCEX -2 per 4 month training post
• 2 MSF – Each MSF must have at a minimum of 5 replies from clinical staff– so ask more than 5 people to complete this for you each time and you should get 5 back!
• An MSF needs to be completed each time over a 6 week time frame or it wont count – keep an eye on how many people have replied
How to complete assessments
• Refer to the college guide on the eportfolio
• This will involve you downloading forms and ticket codes for your assessors to complete each assessment– sounds complicated but isnt too difficult
• It is your responsibility to ensure the assessments are complete not for your supervisor to chase you!
Learning log requirements within the eportfolio
• The learning log contains your record of your experiences, thoughts feelings and reflections
• Used as additional evidence to support your understanding of the GP curriculum and to demonstrate your competency progression
Minimum requirements for the learning log – 1
• Refer to learning log guide
• Minimum 2 entries per week. Must demonstrate reflective learning – descriptive events will not be accepted
• Must include tutorials, clinical accounters and professional conversations
• The log will be looked at 6mnths into each training year and at the end of each training year by the Deanery
Minimum requirement for the learning log – 2
• Must include – Mandatory requirements
• One significant event analysis per 4mnth post
• Reflection on key learning points from each 4mnth post
• Audit during ST3 year– 8 criteria
• BLS, child safety and leadership evidence
• Statement of total leave taken
• Attendance record at VTS teaching
Minimum requirement for the learning log – 3
• Must include safeguarding children level 1 and 2
• For this to be updated annually
• Found RCGP / BMJ website – elearning module
• See learning log guide for further information on the log
Learning log and the PDP
• Ideally share your learning log with your Educational Supervisor
• Once your ES has read the entry and marked this as read, it will be documented against the appropriate curriculum entries
• Once read, if the entry needed further learning, move this into your PDP
• Tick off the PDP entries when learning achieved
• Your PDP is looked at by the Deanery at 6mnths into each year and at the end of each training year
Educational Supervisor (ES) reviews
• Before every ES review you must complete a self assessment, (rating and comments) of each of the 12 competency areas documented in your eportfolio
• Your ES will then with you present, make his/her ratings and comments on each competency area
• Your curriculum coverage, skills log, PDP and learning log are also commented on by your ES in the review
• A judgement is then made on your competency progression
Annual review of competency progression – Information only
• Annually, following the submission of your 11mnths Educational Supervisors review your eportfolio is looked at by the Deanery. Deadline will be in June 2012 ST1 and 2
• If your assessments, reviews, learning logs, PDP are all satisfactory you are automatically moved to the next year of training or signed off at the end of ST3
• If your eportfolio is found to be unsatisfactory you will be expected to come to the Deanery and this may affect your training progression
In conclusion
• Enjoy your training programme
• Remember to keep your eportfolio up to date, to complete your assessments and reviews on time.
• Your chances of getting your nMRCGP exam are then hugely increased
• Good Luck
