Simpson Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre
Chichester Medical Education Centre St Richards Hospital

The Simpson Clinical Skills and Simulation Room is a fantastic purpose built clinical skills facility and forms an important part of the Chichester Medical Education Centre. Built in 2008 and fully established in January 2009 when the Clinical Skills and Simulation Lead was appointed.

The main incentive for implementing the Clinical skills and Simulation Centre has been to facilitate more effective and efficient medical training. By using clinical skills and simulation training it allows for improved quality in patient care and patient safety.

The centre enables the delivery of a wide range of clinical skills. We are able to provide sessions that look at teamwork, leadership and communication skills in a variety of formats. High fidelity simulation scenarios can be run which enables candidates to develop these important skills.

The current facilities occupy a third of the 1st floor of the education centre and is made up of the following parts:

A & B – Clinical Skills and Simulation Leads office & Clinical Skills Administrator
C – Simulation Suite and control room
D – Simpson Clinical Skills Room and simulation observation
E – Roger Miles Clinical Skills Suite and Ward area

Simulation Suite

The Simulation suite is a multi purpose environment which can be set up as a ward, an operating theatre, a GP surgery, as well as patient’s homes to enable simulation of a variety of cases for all specialities.

The suite is adjacent to the control room, where the faculty are able to observe activity in the simulation room and control the manikins. From here the faculty are also able to provide over-the-phone assistance in which ever role is required of them. Other departments can be rung for information that the candidates may require to ensure that the learning experience, through simulation, is as realistic as possible.

The simulation suite is linked through to the Simpson Suite which becomes the observation room during larger simulation sessions. Candidates are able to watch and listen to all the activity in the simulation suite via 3 different camera angles, as well as being able to see the full patient monitor.

The suite has full recording equipment with the ability to record and re-play sessions for debriefing and for future training.

Briefing and debriefing is carried out either in the Simpson suite or the Roger Miles suite.

Equipment includes:
• Crash Trolley including Defibrillator
• Clinical / medical related disposables – Syringes, needles, etc
• Patient bed and trolley
• Anaesthetic Machine
• Resuscitaire

High fidelity manikins

SimMan is a realistic, full body adult, patient simulator, SimMan offers comprehensive clinical functionality to teach the core skills of airway, breathing, cardiac and circulation management. Educational effectiveness – through providing highly realistic patient simulation training experiences for the practise of teamwork, leadership and communication skills. It allows for Multi function use – facilitates training of a wide range of health care professionals encompassing all areas of patient care. The Practise uncommon scenarios – practise in training the unusual cases that learner may face in real life.

SimBaby is an advanced infant patient simulator for team training. With realistic anatomy and clinical functionality, SimBaby allows learners to practice and perfect their skills in a risk-free environment. Realistic infant patient simulation training provides practice of teamwork, leadership and communication skills in a risk-free environment.

SimNewB is designed to meet the training requirements of neonatal emergency medicine and resuscitation courses, SimNewB is the most authentic and comprehensive simulation solution in its field. Making Simulation Easier Easy to integrate into all neonatal training curricula, SimNewB has a innovative user interface and scenario design allows instructors to control the simulator’s responses throughout a training session with the push of a button on the remote handheld control.

Low fidelity Manikins

MegaCode Kid is a realistic manikin of a 6year old, used for training in a wide range of paediatric advanced life saving skills in pre-hospital emergencies. MegaCode Kid has a realistic airway, 1100+ ECGs rhythms, defibrillation and pacing capabilities, and allows drug administration and intraosseous infusion to teach emergency skills.

Sim On The Ward

The newest addition to the simulation family is our ALS simulator manikin. This allows the simulation team to take simulation to the whole multidisciplinary team on the ward in their own environment. The Advanced Life Support Simulator is a realistic interactive training manikin for simulating a wide range of advanced life saving skills in medical emergencies. The simulator responds to clinical intervention, instructor control, and pre-programmed scenarios for effective practice of diagnosis and treatment of a patient. With spontaneous breathing, airway control, voice, sounds, ECG, and many other clinical features, the ALS Simulator is the fully functional emergency care simulator.
